A tip on getting to the starting line healthy? Isn’t that rather obvious?
Yes but sometimes we get so wed to our training plans or life’s daily challenges that we neglect our bodies the last 2 weeks of the race. Consequently, we show up to the race injured, sick or exhausted. So if you find yourself experiencing some aches/pains during a training run or in between training runs it may be a good idea to back off and skip a training run or cut it short. Showing up hurt or sick or exhausted can ruin your race. Therefore, getting to the starting line as healthy as possible should be your top priority.
But my training plan has me peaking at the absolute proper time! I can’t afford to miss any training runs so close to the race!!
99% of your training has been done at this point. Honestly any training runs you do between now and the race will not improve your fitness in any significant measurable way. So if the ankle, achilles, hamstring, or back etc. is bothering you a bit then it is good to exercise caution, take care of your body, and show up to the race as healthy as possible. Cactus Rose is on a course that can really beat up your body (especially the 100). Any injury issues you have going into the race will be exposed and magnified on that course.
Ok I’ll take care of my injuries but there isn’t much I can do about getting sick is there?
Granted getting sick is a bit of bad luck but you can do some things to minimize it. First and foremost is to make sure you are getting plenty of sleep so your body isn’t as susceptible to illness. Second don’t forget basic hygiene…washing hands etc. Third help your immune system by drinking plenty of water and avoiding processed sugar. Finally about 8 days before the race I start taking a herbal supplement called Andrographis that really revs up the immune system. I have found it to be very effective but one can only take it for 10 days straight because it does rev up the immune system.
Any final words of advice?
Besides showing up physically healthy it is important to be as mentally healthy as possible. If your mind is on problems at work or your personal life then it can really suck the energy out of you during the race. So the week of the race is not the time to have fights with your boss or significant other.:-)
